When I paint a food still life, I sometimes feel a little bit like a chef.  I take different ingredients and try to pair them together.  In the end, you not only get a visual sensation, but can also begin to visualize the flavors of the painting.

Below you can watch a video of my entire painting process.  You’ll see that it took me a couple of tries to get the composition right.  Can you see why I changed it?  I think one of the most interesting parts of this painting is the glass and how it melts into the background in some places and jumps out with bright highlights in others.  You can see the techniques I use to paint glass in the video. This is a time lapse demo video, so you’re seeing it at about 5x the actual speed.  I find that this is a good speed to give you a good sense of techniques and yet not bore you to death with real time.  Let me know what you think in the comments.

Замечательное видео. Вы помогли мне написать это упражнение. Даже у меня неумехи стекло получилось реалистичным. Спасибо!

I was so inspired by your painting and your tutorial. Thank you for your generosity. I am a doctor in Montreal who has dreamt of painting for a while. I’m just starting out and there is lots of work to do to get anywhere near good but your tutorial has helped me to progress and mostly continues to infuse inspiration. Your painting with amaretto and persimmons is exceptionnally beautiful.
