Daily painting for Feb 11, 2015

I don’t generally buy fennel, but since I started daily painting, I find myself looking at produce in a different way. I used to buy groceries with a specific dish in mind. But in this case, while I had no idea how I would prepare fennel, I knew that I wanted to paint it. It has an amazing, figurative form and such wonderful subtle color variations, going from almost white to very pale greenish yellow to green, to dark bluish green. After painting it, I wound up slicing it thinly using a mandolin, and mixing it with some blood oranges, pecans, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper to make a really yummy salad.
